Tvm: For those longing for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city life, a nature camp at Thenmala would be the right choice to rejuvenate the frayed nerves. Thenmala is a small village at the foothills of Western Ghats, about 72kms from Thiruvananthapuram, famous for its ecotourism project.

The Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary is the most important segment of Thenmala Ecotourism. Spread over about 100 sq. km, this is the only wildlife sanctuary in Kollam District and harbours large varieties of flora and fauna. Part of Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve, this is one of the richest areas of bio-diversity in Western Ghats. “Shendurney” is derived from a tree locally called ‘Chenkurunji’.

The activities in Thenmala are classified under Cultural Zone, Leisure Zone and Adventure Zone. Some of the attractions are the Elevated Walkway, The Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing, River Crossing, Nature Trails, Resting Spots, Lotus Pond, etc. The nature trail winding through various areas attracts a large number of nature tourists.

Talking to Kerala IT News, Pradeep Kumar K I, Wildlife Warden, Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary said, “We have nature camps designed specially for city dwellers and we don’t encourage single day programmes.” The activities are ideal for team building exercises and outings for the IT industry.
