Tvm: Its action time over the southern skies. Six Sukhoi 30s, eight Jaguars, two IL-78s Flight Refuelling Aircrafts and one AN-32 and AWACS each are participating in Dakshin Prahar, the annual operational exercise of Southern Air Command (SAC), being held during February 9-12, 2011.
Briefing the media, Air Commodore Anil K Jain said that this is the first time the newly acquired AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) is participating in Dakshin Prahar. Another unique feature of this exercise is the flexi use of airspace. This enables simultaneous use of the airspace by Civilian and Defence with no disruption of civilian flights. With all the radars and missile units in SAC being activated, this exercise will hone the skills of IAF’s radar operators.
While the Sukhois and one IL-78 are flying in from Goa for the exercise, the maritime version Jaguars from Jamnagar base and another IL-78 are stationed in Trivandrum Air Force Station adjacent to the Trivandrum International Airport. The AN-32 is from Sulur and the AWACS is coming from Agra. This is the largest ever mobilisation of forces for the air defence exercise in the southern peninsula.
Dakshin Prahar comes close on the heels of Aero India aviation exhibition show at Bangalore. Apart from the above mentioned aircrafts, Avros and Mi-8 provide vital transport support and perform communication duties during the exercise over a vast area stretching from Hyderabad to Kanyakumari.
