Tvm: Trivandrum will play host to eminent literary figures, thinkers, visionaries, artists and cultural enthusiasts participating in the premier edition of the Hay Festival to be held from November 12-14, 2010 at the Kanakakunnu Palace with an inaugural session at the Palace Hall by Shri M A Baby, Minister of Culture and Education; Shashi Tharoor, MP and mega star Mammootty.
Today, The Palace Hall, The Reading Room and The Bandstand will witness 12 power packed sessions with speakers including Mani Shankar Aiyar, Anita Nair, K Satchidanandan, Marcus du Sautoy, Simon Schama, Vikram Seth, RP Raja, Miguel Syjuco, Amrita Tripathi, Tarun Tejpal, Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Hannah Rothschild.
The eclectic mix of intellectual and cultural modules include talks, presentations and discussions on a wide variety of subjects including History, Art, Literature, Politics, Poetry, Films etc. A few exciting sessions include Marcus Di Sautoy’s talk on ‘The Number Mysteries: A Mathematical Odyssey Through Everyday Life’, Miguel Syjuco in conversation with Nilanjana Roy about his prize winning novel Ilustrado, and Mani Shankar’s views on ‘The Secular Fundamentalist: A contrarian view of contemporary India’, among others.
The inaugural evening programme will begin with a cultural show by Kerala Tourism at the Nishagandhi Amphitheatre. The 20 minute cultural show is a specially choreographed piece consisting of Mohiniyattam, Theyyam, Kathakali and Thiruvathira. Asima, a vocal and percussion ensemble based in Trivandrum will also perform in the opening night concert.
With a bouquet of exciting offerings, the Hay Festival, which has been put together in association with Teamwork Productions, is surely set to make a big first impression. Commenting on the festival, K Roy, MD, Teamwork said “We have all been working extremely hard in order to bring the essence of the powerful Hay Festival into the Indian setting. The line up of sessions will surely be an experience that will not be easily forgotten.”
For more than twenty years Hay Festival has brought writers, musicians, film-makers and scientists together from around the world to cross cultural and genre barriers and foster the exchange of ideas. Hay sets literature within a wider cultural and social context and creates live festivals with internationally resonant media impact.
