Bangalore: Kerala has topped Akamai's latest ‘State of the Internet Report’ with an average connection speed of 1,386 Kbps much ahead of the national average connection speed at 897 Kbps. Globally, India is ranked at # 97 with this speed.

Akamai Technologies Inc. is a leader in powering video, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online. Each quarter, Akamai publishes a ‘State of the Internet’ report. This report includes data gathered across Akamai's global server network about attack traffic, connection speeds, Internet penetration and broadband adoption, as well as trends seen in this data over time.

Similar to trends seen in the global data for the Q3 of 2009 released on January 27, 2010, many states in India maintained average speeds above 768 Kbps. Kerala made it’s way to the top of the list from its third position in Q2. Karnataka is at #3 while Tamil Nadu is at #9. The average internet speed in Indian states, is much lower than the average speed in Asia of 4,400 Kbps. For instance, the average speed in the US is 3,792 kbps, in Europe 3,536 Kbps, Africa and South America are at 944 and 1,304 kbps, respectively.

India ranked #21 globally for number of unique IP addresses seen by Akamai, with over 3 million IPs. Kerala is at the tenth position among the states with 25,729 unique IP addresses. Delhi and Maharashtra continued to top the list with over 1 million unique IPs each. In terms of observed attack traffic, India ranked #9 globally, with 3.4% of observed attack traffic with Russia ranked #1 with 13%.
