Kozhikode: Chief Minister, Shri Oommen Chandy has said that the IT industry in Kerala has not made much progress in the recent years. “Though we were the first to establish a Technopark in the country more than 20 years back, we have not made much progress since then. Our share of total IT exports from the country is hardly one percent”, said the CM while interacting with the students of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM-K) at Kozhikode on August 18, 2011, where the State Cabinet had gone for a day long workshop on better governance.

The CM added, “The Technopark at Thiruvananthapuram was the first such park in the country but we missed a lot of chances after that. We know our weakness and we are trying our best to overcome it. The SmartCity Kochi project, when complete, will have national and international companies in it. We have already set in motion programmes to attract global companies to SmartCity”.

He also admitted that lack of opportunities was forcing the educated unemployed youths to move out of Kerala seeking greener pastures. He said the UDF Government was trying to get more investments in the IT Industry and other sectors to create more employment opportunities, so as to retain the skilled resources here itself. He added that his government is determined to put the State's IT industry on the fast track of development and this would open up more opportunities for IT professionals in Kerala.
