Kochi: In a landmark initiative, electronic ticketing system was introduced in 100 private buses plying in Kochi on January 08, 2012. State Transport Minister, Shri V S Sivakumar launched the system by issuing an electronic ticket to Hibi Eden MLA, at a function organised in Ernakulam. In the first phase, the e-ticketing system will be introduced in around 1,300 private buses running in Aluva, Perumbavur, Angamaly, Piravom, Muvattupuzha, Paravur and Tripunithura.
As part of the modernisation initiatives being undertaken by the Private Bus Operators Federation, private buses in Kerala will soon be fitted with Public Information System (PIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS). The technology would be a boon for both the passengers and for the bus operators who will benefit from the real time tracking information. The system will bring in more accountability for the bus operators and help in proper tracking of buses by authorities. The initiative will also provide a new avenue for the advertisers to reach their target customers through static and dynamic advertising content, including audio visual elements which can be displayed in the buses.
It was in early 2008 that Dhanus Technologies, a Chennai based IT company came forward with a proposal to introduce GPS for tracking the movement of over 20,000 private buses plying in Kerala. The firm also entered into an exclusive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kerala State Private Bus Operators Federation to launch this first of a kind initiative of installing PIS in all private buses across Kerala but the project never took off.
