Election plays spoilsport in SmartCity Kochi SEZ approval

E-mail

New Delhi: The Board of Approval (BoA) on Special Economic Zone (SEZ) which met today in New Delhi deferred decision on all SEZ proposals, including the IT / ITeS SEZ SmartCity Kochi project, related to poll bound States keeping in mind the model code of conduct.

After the inter-ministerial board meeting, Rahul Khullar, Commerce Secretary said, “We have taken a conscious decision on anything concerning governments which are going to elections and have deferred all those proposals.” The decision on SmartCity (Kochi) Infrastructure in Kochi and three other applications for setting up new SEZs were deferred as the requests were not endorsed by the respective State Governments.

The Central Government had earlier this month issued a notification granting SEZ status for the 132 acres of land for the SmartCity Kochi project. The approval for the remaining 114 acres is now pending. Tecom, the promoters of the SmartCity projects, wants to start the construction as soon as notification granting SEZ status is issued by the Central Government.

So far, 582 SEZs have been formally approved by the BoA, of which 130 are in operation. SEZs have emerged as major sources for attracting investment and increasing exports in the country.
