State issues ultimatum to Tecom on SmartCity Kochi project

E-mail

Tvm: The State Government has asked Tecom, the Dubai based promoters of the SmartCity Kochi project, to clarify its stand on the project. Chief Minister Shri V S Achuthanandan has said that Tecom would have to respond to the Chief Secretary within a fortnight on whether it is going ahead with the project or not, failing which, it will be understood that Tecom is no longer interested in the project.

The CM disclosed this while briefing the media after the weekly cabinet meeting today. He said the decision to issue an ultimatum was taken by the cabinet as there has been no progress on the work on the Rs.1,500 crore project for the last two years. “The letter to Tecom has been approved and it has been made clear to them that under no circumstances can the freehold property, which they will be getting for the project, can be sold. This would be our final letter and they have to let us know in 15 days,” he added.

The freehold land has been a contentious issue between Tecom and the State Government. Meanwhile, the next Director Board meeting of Smart City Kochi is slated to be held this month. The last meeting was in June.
