Tvm: The Ministry for Human Resource Development, Government of India, has lauded the State Government’s IT@School project for conducting the Information & Communication Technology (ICT) enabled training programme for all visually challenged teachers in Kerala using Free & Open Source Software (FOSS).
In a letter sent to M Sivasankar IAS, Secretary, General Education, Government of Kerala, Anshu Vaish IAS, Secretary, HRD mentions this project as a welcome step towards digital inclusion of differently abled persons to the mainstream. Kerala is the first State to have organised such a programme and it is an example for other States to emulate. The training has not only empowered the visually challenged teachers to make their profession easier using these tools but also helped them in their daily routines, Anshu added.
IT@School is now planning a similar training programme for the visually challenged students in the State on a cluster basis. The IT@School Project had imparted ICT training to all the 238 visually challenged teachers in Kerala during August, 2011. The five day training programme was completely undertaken on FOSS based screen reading software named ORCA and the programme was conducted simultaneously using the Project’s training centres spread across the State.
According to K Anvar Sadath, Executive Director, IT@School Project said, “Integrating ICT in education is our mission and in order to implement a complete ICT enabled educational system in the State, it was important that differentially abled teachers are also trained in ICT, which not only boots their confidence but also have a positive impact in classrooms as well.”
