Tvm: With an aim of providing an opportunity for the public to familiarise with some of the popular free software applications, the IT@School project has planned massive public awareness programmes on Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) during the summer holidays. The first phase of this programme would kick off with one-day seminars to be held at the District Offices of the Project on April 23, 2011.

These seminars would highlight on how to use GNU / Linux applications on the day-to-day activities thereby popularising the use of Free Software among people, which would ultimately create a bunch of FOSS users. During the previous Onam vacation, 22,375 Student School IT Co-ordinators (SSITCs) were trained in specific ICT skills. Similarly 51,790 School IT Club members were trained during the Christmas holidays. Following this, there were several requests from public to extend these trainings to them as well to encourage the use of Free Software.

In a release, K Anvar Sadath, Executive Director, IT@School Project said, “The aim is to gradually extend the facilities available in schools during holidays for imparting free software based ICT training to parents and general public with the help of Student IT Club members. This process would facilitate effective usage of students and resources at schools such as computer labs and peripherals, and also would result in creating a better harmony between students, parents and also general public. We will also make use the help of institutions / organisations which works in the Free Software arena.”

In the first phase, the programmes will be held in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargod districts. The sessions would shed light on the use and benefits of GNU / Linux, scope of Open Office packages, Malayalam typing, multimedia packages, image editing, sound recording, video editing, GNU / Linux installation etc. The participants of this training programme would be provided with a resource DVD containing free software applications.

The IT@School Project, which is the technology arm of Education Department of Kerala Government, is termed as world’s largest simultaneous deployment of FOSS based ICT education. Every year an estimated 50 lakh students benefit in FOSS based ICT enabled education.
