Kannur: As the free online encyclopedia, Wikipedia completes 10 successful years on January 15, 2011, various celebrations are being planned in different parts of the world. Kerala too will have its own tenth anniversary celebrations in Kannur.
The day will also mark the eight anniversary of Wikipedia Malayalam. As an initiative of the Wikimedia Foundation to propagate free source of information across the world in different languages, Wikipedia was made possible in January 15, 2001. If Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger were the founders of Wikipedia; Vinod Menon M P, a native of Thiruvananthapuram and research student of an American University, started Wikipedia Malayalam on December 21, 2002.
The day long Wikipedia Anniversary Celebrations will be inaugurated by renowned social worker and former Vice Chancellor of Kerala University, Dr. B Iqbal. Language Computing Researcher and Lecturer of Mahe Mahama Gandhi Government College, Dr. Mahesh Mangalatt will deliver the keynote address. Other programmes to be held by the Malayalam Wiki organisers include an introduction to Wikipedia and Wikipedia Malayalam apart from a seminar to be conducted by experts on writing in Malayalam Wiki.
