Kochi: The number of cyber crime cases in Kerala has been on the increase over the last two years, state Director General of Police Jacob Punnose said today.
Even as Kerala is stepping up its combat against cyber crimes in the state by setting up cyber cells in all districts, the number of cyber crimes in God's Own Country is on the rise, said the DGP. He was speaking on 'Cyber crimes relating to women and children' at the Women Lawyers National conference. Observing that the use of the computer for criminal purposes was on the increase he warned that the cyber space will be ruled by criminals, if we leave it unguarded. The cyber crimes in the state have more than tripled in three years.
The cyber cell of the police, which was launched in 2007, had got around 3000 cases that year. Last year the number of complaints was 14,406 and upto December 1 this year it had touched 29,346, he said adding that in 2010 it might cross 50,000, if this trend continues.
On difficulties in investigating cyber crimes, he said "while protecting the freedom of internet and many of its good things, we must definitely think of restraining such freedom by common law".
