Tvm: GTech, the Group of Technology Companies in Kerala has hailed the agreement reached between the Government of Kerala and representatives of the Dubai Government for the SmartCity Kochi project. In a release, GTech said that the determination to sort out all outstanding issues and the State Cabinet’s ratification of the agreement almost immediately thereafter sends out positive signals to the investor community. It is equally encouraging to note that clear cut milestones have been spelt out and contentious issues have all been addressed. These are welcome signals.
V K Mathews, President, GTech said, “As an organisation that works for the accelerated growth of the IT / ITeS sector in Kerala, GTech is happy to note that an important milestone in the implementation of the SmartCity Kochi project has been crossed. We do hope that all the parties concerned will take concrete steps in a time bound manner to ensure that the Smart City project becomes a reality. A project that has the potential to offer direct employment opportunities to nearly one lakh people is critical to the IT industry in the state and, when complete, will go a long way in making Kerala figure prominently in the IT map of the country”.
GTech considers Information Technology as one of the most suitable industry for a state like Kerala. The industry is totally green, is low on power requirement and has one of the lowest land to employee ratio. Besides, it offers huge employment opportunities with attractive remuneration. Hence, IT industry, if encouraged to grow, has the potential to dramatically transform the socio economic landscape of Kerala. The SmartCity Kochi project, if executed as originally envisaged, would be a significant step in this direction. GTech, however, feels that this is only the beginning and much needs to be done as follow up action.
The success of the project will depend on the commitment of the shareholders - State Government, Tecom and SmartCity - to play their individual roles in letter and spirit. GTech considers the Government of Dubai‘s appetite to invest in large infrastructural projects, post the global economic meltdown, crucial to the success of the SmartCity Kochi project
